New driving range tee from the 2nd hole
New driving range tee from the 2nd hole

Last week Aspen finished the subgrade on the new driving range tee. The new tee is over 30k square feet, by comparison, our current driving range tee is less than 8k square feet. The also finished the pad for the performance center, which is adjacent to the tee on the left hand side and will feed into a short game area. For reference, the new driving range tee spans from the old 7th blue tee box all the way to the old bunker that sat too the left of the old 9th fairway. The performance center will sit atop the old 7th blue tees. The tee and performance center are situated to play through the old Maintenance dump area and pole barn towards the old blue tees for 8.

The old maintenance shop has been completely demolished and hauled away and will serve as the new 9th green location. The new 9th tees, have been built and graded and run diagonally from the old white tee on 9 and between the 2 large oaks that sat to the right of the old 8th green and the wood line surrounding the old maintenance dump area. The new 9th hole will have slight dogleg right and the fairway will be split by the stream that runs along country club road. Country club road will be terminated at the property line as well as the road leading to the old clubhouse and converted to fairway and rough for the 9th hole.

The new 8th hole, which plays a similar routing to the old 7th hole, has been rough graded. the tees have been moved adjacent to the property line to play as a mostly straight uphill par 4. The fairway has been bowled to resemble a gentle half pipe that will feed balls to the middle. A new bunker has been shaped on the right side in a similar location as the bunker on the old 7th, and a fairway bunker added to the left hand side. The green was moved 20’ towards the left property line and will feature a gentle 1% slope from back to front with a small false front in the left corner established. Bunkers have been added to either side of the green.

Aspen is currently working on lowering the first 3rd of the new 7th hole, old 6th and raising the final 3rd to balance out the grade. The tees for the new 7th will run between the old bathroom and 3rd hole, a severe shift to the right compared to the old 6th hole. The mounds the ran along the old 6th hole will be lowered to provide sight lines to the fairway and the tees will be elevated.

Jamerson Lewis complete the pad pour for the new turf care center on Friday last week and plan to begin erecting the building this coming Monday the 17th. The new turf care site is located off of Ruffner Lane and the building sits atop the old 8th green.

A lot of progress has happened over the last 2 weeks and with the driving range tee now complete soil moving efforts can concentrate on feature shaping. I expect several additional holes to be rough-shaped by the end of the month.
